The Cruden Bay & District Horticultural Club, formerly known as the Cruden Bay Horticultural Society, is a long-standing community organisation based in Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire. Established in 1983, the club has played a significant role in enhancing the village’s aesthetic appeal and fostering community spirit through horticultural activities.
One of the club’s primary contributions is organising the annual Cruden Bay Flower and Vegetable Show, a highlight in the village calendar. This event showcases local talent in gardening, floral art, baking and crafts. In recent years the show has been held at Longhaven Public Hall and recognises numerous local participants for their contributions. This year’s show will once again be held at Longhaven Hall, on Saturday 23 August from 1 – 3pm.
The annual Best Kept Gardens Competition recognises the efforts of local residents, and the prize money, which is awarded at the show, is donated by Cruden Bay Community Association.
Beyond the annual show, the club is instrumental in beautifying the village during the summer months. Committee members, assisted by volunteers, plant and maintain floral displays throughout Cruden Bay, contributing to the village’s charm and appeal. Their efforts have been recognised in initiatives like Buchan in Bloom.
The club’s activities are supported by community engagement and occasional grants. Since 2020 the club has applied for, and been awarded, Aberdeenshire Council’s Brighter Village Initiative Grant, enabling the club to cultivate new areas, purchase plants and replace planters, further enhancing the village’s appearance.
