Cruden Bay Golf Course is a renowned traditional links golf course located in Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire, on the northeast coast of Scotland. It is widely celebrated for its stunning coastal scenery, challenging layout, and historical significance in the golfing world.
Discover Cruden Bay Golf Club – A Timeless Golfing Gem on Scotland’s North-East Coast
Nestled on the rugged and dramatic Aberdeenshire coastline, Cruden Bay Golf Club is more than just a golf course – it’s a destination that fuses tradition, challenge, and unforgettable beauty. Ranked among the Top 100 golf courses in the world, Cruden Bay offers a golfing experience that rivals Scotland’s most iconic links, yet with a charm and authenticity all its own.
A Historic Jewel of Scottish Golf
Steeped in history, the origins of Cruden Bay Golf Club date back to 1899, when it was first laid out by the legendary Old Tom Morris and Archie Simpson. Commissioned by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company to attract tourism to the area, the course was part of a grander vision tied to the Cruden Bay Hotel, once one of the most luxurious resorts in the country.
Though the original hotel is gone, the spirit of old-world hospitality and the classic links character remain at the heart of Cruden Bay’s identity. The course was updated in the 1920s by renowned architect Tom Simpson, whose thoughtful refinements created the routing that continues to delight golfers to this day.
A World-Renowned Championship Links
The 18-hole championship course is a masterpiece of traditional links design. Measuring just over 6,600 yards from the back tees, it may not be the longest course by modern standards, but it is revered for its strategic complexity, dramatic elevation changes, and stunning vistas over the North Sea. Every hole tells a story, from the iconic “Whins” and “Mickle Folds” to the challenging blind shots and natural dunes that define its identity.
Cruden Bay is consistently ranked among the best in the world, earning praise for its uniqueness, character, and challenge. Golf Digest, Golf World, and National Club Golfer regularly feature Cruden Bay in their international rankings – a testament to the course’s quality and allure.
The 9-Hole St Olaf Course – A Hidden Delight
For those seeking a shorter but equally satisfying golf experience, the 9-hole St Olaf Course offers a delightful alternative. Ideal for a quick round or for beginners and families, this course maintains the same natural beauty and terrain as the championship layout. It’s the perfect warm-up or a more relaxed way to enjoy Cruden Bay’s magical setting.
