St. James the Less Church is a historic Scottish Episcopal church situated on Chapel Hill, approximately one mile outside the coastal village of Cruden Bay in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Its prominent spire makes it a distinctive landmark visible from both land and sea.

🕍 Historical Significance

The current church building was consecrated on November 16, 1843, replacing an earlier chapel erected in 1765. Designed by Scottish architect William Hay, it was his first commissioned work. The church is constructed in the Early English style, featuring long, narrow lancet windows and a 90-foot-high spire. stmarystjames.org.uk

The site holds deeper historical roots; the church’s font originates from a much earlier chapel built to commemorate a battle between the Scots and Danes in 1012. The name “Cruden” is derived from the Gaelic Croch Dain, meaning “Slaughter of Danes,” reflecting this history.

🎨 Architectural Features

  • Interior Design: The church underwent a significant interior redesign in 1983, resulting in a bright and welcoming space with visible wooden roof trusses.

  • Artistic Elements: Notable features include wall hangings depicting the four Evangelists, created by artist Pam Whalley. These pieces are inspired by illustrations from the Book of Kells. Historic Artifacts: The church houses a pipe organ dating from 1849, built by the firm Rust of Chelmsford. Additionally, a bell inscribed “Crwden 1737” is a cherished possession, historically used to call the congregation to worship. stmarystjames.org.uk
